Real Conversations: Women, Relationships, HIV Prevention & the Future of Cure Research

National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a vital touchpoint for centering our health, our stories, and our collective future. On March 30, we invite the NCCU community to an evening of transparency and mission-driven dialogue.

This event is designed to foster a supportive environment to discuss the realities of HIV prevention, the power of advocacy, and the clinical progress toward a cure.

We are moving away from the podium to host a facilitated "Story Circle" featuring Humberto Orozco, LaToya Murchison, and Rachel Burdorf. Our featured guests, who members of the UNC CARE Community Advisory Board at the HIV Cure Center, will share the pivotal moments that led them to HIV advocacy and research, offering their perspective and experience from years on the front lines of community health.

The “Story Circle” will offer a dedicated, "no-judgment" space to address the practicalities of sexual health with clarity and evidence-based information. Some of the topics to be discussed include:

  • Navigating HIV testing and PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) within modern relationships.

  • Fostering agency and empowerment in sexual health decision-making.

We will also explore the distinction between long-term treatment and remission, the ethics of clinical trials, and why diverse representation is non-negotiable for medical equity.

Whether you are seeking advice on supporting a peer, information on the safety of research participation, or ways to get involved in advocacy without burnout, our guests will be there to provide direct, informed answers.

To ensure a productive space for all attendees, we have established the following agreements: Mutual respect, confidentiality, and a commitment to no judgment. Whether you plan to speak or listen, your presence contributes to a healthier community.

This event is co-sponsored by UNC CARE Community Advisory Board, UNC HIV Cure Center, NCCU Student Center, NCCU Women’s Center, and RAICES Hispanic/Latino Student Organization

Black History Month Event

Documentary Screening & Conversation: Wicked Silence

On February 25, Curated Clinical is proud to partner with Triad Cultural Arts for a screening of the documentary Wicked Silence, followed by a community-led conversation.

The Film: Wicked Silence

Wicked Silence is a powerful documentary that details the history of the eugenics movement in North Carolina, specifically focusing on the state-sanctioned sterilization programs that targeted vulnerable populations between 1929 and 1974. Through intimate survivor testimony and historical research, the film recounts how thousands of individuals, predominantly Black women, were stripped of their reproductive rights under the guise of "public health" and "social fitness."

The Purpose: Why We Reflect

The purpose of this event during Black History Month is rooted in the belief that  securing the  future of health comes with first understanding the history that shaped our current landscape. Reflection is a form of protection; by looking back, we identify the origins of the barriers we face today.

  • Validating the Past: We are screening Wicked Silence to acknowledge the historical truths. This reflection allows us to name the root causes of mistrust and address them openly in a safe, community-centered environment.

  • Translating Lessons: Understanding history gives us the language to advocate for ourselves in the present. This event is designed to strip away the complexity of medical research and replace it with clear, actionable insights.

  • Strengthening the Foundation: We are meeting at the Enterprise Center because community wellness belongs in the community. By reflecting together, we turn historical "lessons learned" into a sustainable footprint for future health initiatives.

Understanding the Barriers

Research helps us put a spotlight on the specific obstacles that are still felt today. According to a 2022 Pew Research Center report:

  • 55% of Black Americans report negative experiences with doctors, often feeling their pain is not taken seriously.

  • 51% of Black Americans believe the U.S. healthcare system was designed to hold Black people back.

  • 61% of Black women under 50, often the primary health decision-makers for their families, share this sentiment.

  • 55% of Black Americans believe that medical experiments are still being conducted on Black people without their knowledge or consent today.

What the Evening Looks Like

The event is designed to be a safe, open space for dialogue. We invite you to join us for the full program:

  • 6:00 PM | Networking & Connection: Doors open at 5:45 PM. We’ll start the evening by breaking bread and connecting with neighbors.

  • 6:25 PM | The Screening: A 30-minute viewing of Wicked Silence, a film that explores the profound impact of medical history on our community.

  • 6:55 PM | Reflection & Fireside Chat: Dr. Jasmine Getrouw will share a personal reflection, followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Jariah Strozier from Inside Edge, Dr. Allison Mathews Allen from Curated Clinical, and Cheryl Harry from Triad Cultural Arts.

  • 7:30 PM | Audience Q&A: This is the most vital part of the night. It’s your turn to ask questions, share your thoughts, and tell us what health equity looks like to you.

The conversation shouldn’t end after the event. Stay informed about health resources, future community events, and clinical opportunities by signing up for the Curated Clinical newsletter.
